Nokia has showcased an update for its Symbian platform, along with three soon-to-land handsets running the operating system.
Dubbed Symbian Belle, the revamped OS boosts the number of homescreens available on a phone from three to six to allow users more space to store apps, as well as providing more scope to customise their layouts with new, different sized live widgets.
Nokia has also added an Android-style pull down menu and taskbar to access notifications from any of the home screens. And perhaps most excitingly, it has brought Near Field Communications (NFC) tech to the phones for the first time to enable Nokia phone owners to use their handsets to pay for low ticket items by swiping them over a reader.
Contacts, videos and images can also now be shared with other NFC-enabled devices too and there’s the option to unlock new content in games by touching two Symbian Belle devices together.
Heading Nokia’s Symbian Belle charge are three handsets, dubbed the 600, 700 and 701.
Billed as Nokia’s smallest-ever smartphone with dimensions of 110 x 50.7 x 9.7mm, the 700 teams a 1GHz processor with a 3.2 inch AMOLED screen ClearBlack display, expandable memory of up to 32GB via microSD card support and a five-megapixel camera.

Despite the similarity of their titles, the 701 is a real step up. Features include an eight-megapixel camera, secondary snapper for video calls and a 3.5-inch touchscreen that Nokia claims is the “brightest-ever mobile phone display”.
And completing the triumvirate is the 600. Designed for music fans, this is Nokia’s loudest phone so far and offers the option to stream music wirelessly to NFC-enabled accessories. It’s also home to a five-megapixel camera and a 1GHz processor and will be available at a lower price point to the 700 and 701.
